Our historical reference · London, 1779

An idea endures. The responsibility grows.

An eighteenth-century book gives our guiding principle a historical reference. The Medical Register for the Year 1779 represents the organisation of information about doctors. For Trusted Ones, it inspires a responsibility today: to review information, understand its context and explain a personal selection.

A title, a place and a publication year

The bibliographic reference is The Medical Register for the Year 1779. London, printed for J. Murray, 1779. The Open Library catalogue entry and its associated Internet Archive record make this source accessible.

We use the publication year as a visible source reference. It marks neither the founding of Trusted Ones nor the start of a present-day verification process. The historical volume confers no current licence, recognition or institutional connection.

A tradition of looking closely

A medical directory records names and information. It creates a place where that information can be found. For Trusted Ones, this represents an enduring idea: trust needs a foundation that people can refer to.

Our responsibility begins where a statement raises a question. Who stands behind a document? What has been checked? What does it mean for the individual? These questions connect the historical reference with our work today.

A clear distinction from the GMC

The 1779 source is not the register of the General Medical Council. The GMC gives 1858 as the year of its establishment and 1859 as the year of its first Medical Register. The similar names must not obscure this chronological and institutional distinction.

Trusted Ones claims no continuity, succession, collaboration or official recognition on that basis. Nor does this series claim that the 1779 source was the first medical directory in the world.

What this means for our work today

Heritage commits us to an approach. We value traceable evidence, preserve the independence of our selection and combine personal criteria with human judgement.

The date refers to the historical work. Our responsibility lies in the work Trusted Ones does today: explaining what supports a statement and personally reviewing every final doctor option.
